Yes! If you want a specific recommendation, USR/3COM makes
a "Pro" modem which is a non-winmodem, and even mentions
Linux compatibility on the box. Both internal and external
versions are available.

It's probably not the cheapest modem you can find, but the
quality is outstanding. I recently upgraded my home modem to
one of these, and after years of 26.6K connects on a 56K Hayes
modem, I moved up to the 36-42K connect range!!! Right now
I'm connected as: CONNECT 38666/ARQ/V90/LAPM/V42BIS
It's no DSL or cable modem, but I'll take what I can get out
here in the sticks! :-)

Off topic: Speaking of USB, I recently plugged a USB
floppy drive into a machine running Redhat 7.1, and it
was recoginized as a SCSI emulated disk drive upon boot.
No special setup required! Changing /dev/fd0 to /dev/sdx
in the fstab, it runs perfectly as a normal floppy drive!
Probably no big deal, but I was impressed! :-)
