I have a USR Sportster Faxmodem V.90 x2

I'm connected at 49333/ARQ. Since I got this modem I thought I was having
problems with the phone line. Sometimes when dialing I would hear a high
pitched whine. Ameritech said that the power from the modem was "feeding
back" down the phone line and that was causing problems. I am frequently
dropping connections. The last time I heard the noise while dialing I picked
the phone up and shut off the modem and the noise went away.

Is Ameritech feeding me a line of crap or is this a real issue? Also it
doesn't look like I'm getting a v90 connection. Since I only got a Windows
CDROM with the modem is there another source for documentation? What should
I be using for a connect string?
