Yeah, you kept the defaults active.  Goto the "diamond" in Nautilus
and deactivate a lot of things to run faster -- especially "use
Nautilus as my desktop."

Run Windows 2000 and pull up an imaging thumbnail program, MS IE and
some other stuff at the same time on the same config and you'll see
what I mean.
