Last night, I got an e-mail from the gnome-db guys saying they were wrong 
and it wasn't automake/autoconf but libtool that needed updateing.  Having 
done that the compile goes past that point, and after one more "cvs update" 
it even built all the way.

So I revise my question:  What is libtool?  And more broadly is there a good
intro-document to what all this means?  I roughly understand make (make), 
compile (gcc), and link (ld), but the configure/make scripts of some of 
these new packages makes my eyes water.
