In putting in the memory, did you make sure your CPU fan was clear
of any wiring?  I have put in components only to end up pushing a
wiring near the CPU fan (or other fan).

Otherwise, yes, fans go all the time.  As the sleeve or ball bearing
wears down, it will get noisy.  But I think you simply might need to
make sure you didn't obstruct the fins on a fan.
