Re: Trouble in River City

Hi Bob,

I'd say "Merry Christmas", but it sounds like you might not agree. :{)

Down to business. Let me see if I got the facts straight from your email:

Your first HD crashed containing Linux.
You are completely backed up to tape.
You moved your 2nd HD to be the first, and installed RH4.2.
You now can't get the kernel to compile.
Now you're stuck because you can't get ftape support in the kernel.

I'm willing to help if I can.
Would it do any good for me to compile a kernel for you, with
the parameters you specify and email it to you? I can do that.
Just send me the options you want on/off/module.
Anything else I can do? Let me know.

One other point. The first thing I always do in a situation
like this, is flick the switch and put your backup tapes into
write protect mode. Do it now, if you haven't already!!!

BTW, (you may not want to hear this now), but I have not had
very good luck with Maxtor drives. I've had (4) at work and
(3) died long before their time. Their tech support gave me
a very hard time, not believing me because I was running Linux.
I absolutely hate Maxtor and will never own another!
