I don't know if this will answer your question,
but if you are using fvwm or one of its versions (95, afterstep, ...),
then there is an option in the rcfile (eg. ~/.fvwmrc) about moving
the entire window (opaque) or just a frame.
This means that if the window occupies more than 50% (say) of the screen, then
the window manager should only show a frame while moving the window.
I can't remember the name of that option, and I haven't got a linux box at
hand, sorry.
