It's refreshing to hear the ideas of our new KLUG members. I agree with you
that we do need some leadership to keep the meetings running smoothly, but I
have a couple of other ideas as well.
One of the problems that we have been having at meetings, is that on most
occasions the entire group is not present. Someone always misses, and their
for does not get a say in the decisions the group makes.
[And the bigger the group gets, the more this is going to happen]
We have been worried that if we try to make a decision without everyone
present, people will feel left out and left behind. I suggest setting a
number of say 7 people or so, and make it a rule that in order to make any
group wide decisions at least this number of people must be present to vote.
[I agree with the idea of setting a minimum. That's a fairly common practice
in volunteer type groups. Also, if the group publishes an agenda a week or so
in advance indicating what will be voted on then, those who are interested can
make sure that they attend. And, since there is this cool electronic system,
why not accept e-mail votes if someone absolutely can't make it to the
meeting. Then you could establish a minimum number of votes instead of a
minimum attendance. Whaddya think?]
IMHO I believe that this is about the only way that we will be able to get
anything done.
The other suggestion I have, is that we need to keep our meetings in a bit
more order that we usually do. For instance, we need to have someone
facilitate bringing the meeting to order, and and then to adjourn it when we
are done. It would also be nice to make up some sort of agenda to keep the
meetings going.
[ I agree with this 100%. ]
I don't think that this will be very difficult, since we already have a list
of topics to be discussed, and some suggested people to discuss them. As far
as the Facilitator of the meeting goes, perhaps we could pick someone at
random at the beginning of each meeting just to keep everything fair.
[ Yeah, the difficult part is finding someone. Perhaps random selection is
the best way. Unless there's somebody who wants to do it all the time. I
sure don't, but once in a great while might be ok. Maybe that person could
also do the meeting minutes and handle the next meeting's agenda. Kinda like
Facilitator of the Week :) ]
OK I'm done now...Questions? Comments? Points of Rebuttal?
