Notes from a PAIR of KLUG Meetings, 8 and 15 March
Summary: Two informal meetings with no presentations, with discussions on a
wide ranging set of issues. Some notes below, but first....
Announcements
The votes are in! The choice has been made!
Tuesday evening is the best time of the week for our meetings. We are
making arrangements to switch the meeting time.
NEXT SUNDAY, March 22, is our first monthly "Formal/Business" meeting,
and possibly our FINAL meeting on Sunday afternoon. Adam Williams
will be presenting the topic "Getting Your Very Own Domain", and we
shall have nominations for officers, as well as an opportunity for
principle volunteers to step forward.
We really need to see you there!! This is a meeting that will help deter-
mine the course of events, as we'll then be much better organized....
Our new website is up and running now, please visit it and make comments
to Bruce Smith(bruce@armintl.com) and/or Bob Brown (bob@acm.org) the URL:

8 March, 1998
Meeting started at 3:05
Attending: Chris Chio, Scott Yellig, Bruce Smith, Mike List, Bob Brown
We sat in the lobby at PnU and discussed a number of issues. No presentation
was planned, and discussions ran along the following topics:
- Differences among Linux distributions; largely packaging, also some of
the directory usage conventions.
- Comparing different packaging and installation procedures would be nice.
looking at .deb (Debian), .tgz (Slackware), and .rpm (Suse, Red Hat)
could also be interesting.
- We should present a Slackware install! We're up to 3.4. Brown will bring
in a machine for this, List will perform the install.
- Java... the jdk 1.1.5 seems to be out. Thhese apps take PILES of memory.
Bob is part of a team using Java for "conventional" programming, goal is
a portable demonstration interpreter. Chio is doing things like running a
Java version of "ICQ" an internet paging package.
- Suggested topic: Security and allowing other people to log on to your
system.
- Another suggested topic... NFS, locally and over the Internet.
- Discussion about setting up a small (home) LAN. Some discussion of net-
work cards, wiring, connectors, hubs.
Meeting broke up about 5:30 PM.

Brown is persuing this.
- Burning CDROMS... a topic researched in depth by Bruce.
- Brown is setting up a LAN, more discussion on LAN issues.
- Questions/Problems getting to net-link newsgroups.
- Publicity for the group? additonal sites: Telecity, Yahoo Kazoo,
maybe others?
