XDM question

I am running XDM as the login on my computer, and I have configured it
to start via the ~.xinitrc file, so it starts my usual window manager,
but it appears, from things I've tried in an xterm that my path has been
replaced by a very restrictive one, and I have to specify the whole path
when running, say netscape.
Because of this, I can't use the popup menu items without going into my
wmrc file and changing everything to fullpath names, unless someone can
tell me another solution.
XDM documentation seems to be pretty sparse unless it's buried in the
depths of another X related HOWTO. Perhaps a HOWTO wold be in order.
