Meeting Notes
31 March, 1998
The meeting began at 6:15 PM.
Present: Chris Gidman, Robert Brown, Bruce Smith, Rick Knowlton,
Adam Williams, Scott Yelling, Chris Chio
Bob presented an overview of translators, compilers and interpreters,
beginning with how each attempted to solve the three basic problems in
software development:
1. The Man-Machine Problem
2. The Portability Problem
3. The Expressibility Problem
Then he discussed the relative strengths and weaknesses of each
solution, and explained the basic vernacular of each (object module,
link-editing, static load, etc...). Also included were some references to
debugging tools such as "Electric Fence".
His topic led into a discussion about how programming languages handle
multi-threading, and the idiosyncrasies of how different OS's allocate and free
memory.
Following that was a spontaneous discussion of network security and
firewalls, which will probably be a topic for a future meeting. Specifically
discussed were the hardware requirements and the use of IP Masquerading and
Proxy servers.
All in all a very diverse and informative meeting.
