Yes, that's my point. It not infringement to reverse engineer anything.
What you DO with it later is another issue...

Technically no. If you record something and don't tell anyone, or are doing
it for testing, no one's going to come after you.

OK, this reads like a real good explanation, but I'm not intimidated by it.
Sounds like a decent group project to me....
