That looks like the same problem I was having with a similar 3COM 
card a couple months ago.

I downloaded the latest kernel driver for that card from: 
   http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
installed it on the most recent kernel version (2.0.33), 
and I haven't had the problem since (knock wood).
