I'd guess yes, but you might be able to test it with "top"
to see if Netscape is still getting CPU time.

BTW, I don't know if you're running Netscape ver 3 or 4, 
but in ver 4, you can hit ESC to "stop animations".
Nice feature if you're on some screen (that'll go nameless :)
that has some animated GIF that drives you nuts!  :{)
