I don't know if I'll be much help on this one.
I tried StarOffice on Redhat 5, and you got farther than I did.
(I just gave up and didn't bother downloading a different libc)

One thing you can look at, is to make sure you have a link to
your new libc file.  It should look something like:
...   libc.so.5 -> libc-5.4.44.so

Also, do a "ldd" on the program you're having problems with
and see what libraries it really needs.  (and check the link again)
