That's another thing I keep noticing: The element of random chance is very
high in computing. Person A can have nothing but heartache with system X,
and yet person B with an identical setup can be perfectly happy. I don't
think this can be stressed enough.

Just remember to keep lots of cluon sinks and bogon detectors about.

A friend whose opinion I respect told me that Diamond used to be most
disliked by the open source community because they were very tight about
letting you know how to program for their hardware, but that Matrox took
over that position not long afterward. Personally, I don't think I've done
enough video-intensive work to render an informed opinion on the merits of
various cards or drivers, regardless of how many different cards I may have
owned in my life. So I'll just note that I've been pretty happy with every
video card I've owned, and have managed to make it perform to the best of
its ability with relative ease regardless of what OS I was using.

Would you tell me your opinion on the price/performance, and other merits,
of the Diamond Fire 1000 GL? Does it work well with Linux? A friend is
considering buying one for his birthday and would like to be assured that
it will perform capably in both 95 and Linux.
