When you have the USR installed can you "cu" to the modem and issue commands
manually?
i.e cu -l /dev/ttyS1
ATZ
OK
Then you would know if you are communicating with the modem. If it is a PnP
modem be certain that none of the setting are being changed when you boot up
the machines (I think PnP BIOS machines can do that from time to time, not
sure though I always disable PnP). The "cu" program comes in the uucp package,
so you will have to install that RPM.
