You mean until they encounter Linux, as these people evidently did.

Naturally. They also apply all the same criteria to what they see in the MS 
world to what they experience in getting Linux going.

But we KNEW that packaging and configuration is not something that Linux
handles well out of the box.

Yes, I've been to regedit, but I didn't have to go there to configure my NT
install to work on the Internet, or install a whole pile o'software.

I claim that most NT users never see regedit.

Reporters almost always are behind the curve on this stuff, and although I
regret it I see they have limits. You expect a former journalism major under
editorial and deadline pressure, and struggling to write something to ALSO 
get all the technology right? Sorry, that's rare, even at the level of the 
New York Times or PBS/NPR.

It's important to be able to correct these kinds of things, usually by 
wrting the the offenders.
