Meeting August 25th - Trials and Tribulations of a Networking Novice
Some people may think that our more experienced members move forward into
new areas easily and seamlessly; this is not always the case. Encouraged
by literature on networking, goaded by the demands of clients, and supported
by members of KLUG, I undertook the construction of a Local Area Network: this
is the story of that effort. Unexpected problems came up, often with unpredictable
solutions; ultimately it was persistence, teamwork, and the discovery
of some simple errors and incorrect assumptions that drove home the lessons
and made the LAN possible. The story is a good case study of how people learn
new disciplines, by doing, getting a little lost, and really learning.
A rich network provides a different view of computing than traditional
single processor computer systems; the new economics of hardware and
quality open-source software allow great creativity and opportunity for
the hobbyist, entrepreneur, and software developer. We'll take a look at
what it took, current plans, and future ideas in networking.
Robert Brown is a founding member and current chairman of KLUG, and has over
20 years experience in software development in numerous environments, disciplines,
and industries. An intermittant user of UNIX systems for close to 10 years, Bob
has developed software for the distributed processing and client-server models,
and now has his first experience in building and administering his own network.
When he's not bouncing between network nodes, or client, he can be seen
cycling on the Kal-Haven trail, hiking the countryside in search of nature
photographs, or helping to organize volunteer activities around computing,
for KLUG and the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery).

SPECIAL NOTE:
Meeting attendence is important! Coming to three meetings will qualify you
as a full member of KLUG, meaning that you can participate in the process of
making formal decisions, including voting for officers.
During the last week in January, KLUG decided (by vote) to define a voting
KLUG member as one who has attended three KLUG meetings:
"In order to make any group wide decisions during a meeting, at least
7 people must be in attendance, and each of these 7 people must have
been to at least 3 meetings before."
As there are people who are examing how to better organize KLUG to serve a
growing list of people interested in Linux, it's important to be aware of
this so you can be assured of participating in any group decisions.
