linux.
hey, i work at a computer store here in kalamazoo. and i don't get this, 50%
of the people that come in are looking for macintosh stuff.
pretty strange, we also get people from the kalamazoo macintosh users group
coming in, also known as kmug, heh. they also gave us a newsletter.
hmm maybe klug should have one, just an idea. i'm sure this macintosh users
group may be a little bigger, so it'd be easier to get one made. maybe klug
should make one? might be a good idea.
i've also suggested selling any version of linux, but haven't been succesful.
that's one thing i've always wanted to see, an actual store in kalamazoo that
sold linux besides bestbuy. i don't think there are any. and another thing.
we sell new and used computer equipment, right now we have about 16 Digital
Celebris 560's not being sold, they have 540mb hard drives, 16mb of memory, no
cdrom drive, a floppy, and a socket 4 and a socket 5. socket 5 has a p90 in
it, does anyone know what the socket 4 can be used for? i have no idea myself.
has anyone ever installed linux on these systems? or know anymore information
on them?
we had installed win98/95 on 2 or 3 of them, but it pretty much runs like crap
on them. and it's not worth paying $84 to install win95/98 on them, unless
people are going to actually buy them. so i made a suggestion of putting
redhat linux on all of them. so now all i've got to do is bring in the cd, and
we'll be the first kalamazoo computer store to sell systems with the choice of
linux preinstalled.
there's one problem with that. nobody around here knows what linux is, or how
to use it, i hate to say. so if they want win95 on them, we'll do that for
them. i'm hoping if we have linux installed, we'll actually get some people
that want it. right now we sell these systems for $299, which is alright i
guess.
i'd sell them for less, but hey i don't make the prices.
and we also buy hardware and systems, as long as they're better then a 486,
just don't come in thinking you'll get $250 from it, most 486's we'll only pay
$50-100 for.
oh yeah. we also have the same 17" monitors bestbuy had for $500, for only
$250. not bad really, i'd buy one myself but i already bought an acerview a
few months before. oh yeah, their sony trinitron's. probably some of the best
you can get.
some of our stuff is a rip-off though, thanks to our distributor. but oh well.
we can't sell stuff 20 dollars less then what we paid for it.
(just don't buy our matrox mystiques. heh.)
the macintosh people are coming in here bugging us so much to carry mac stuff,
the owner is thinking about stocking macintosh hardware and systems.
maybe that's what we need to do, try and convince him to sell more linux
stuff. it's just that there's not much demand for that kind of stuff i hate to
say.
and yeah, i'm not trying to advertise the store or anything like that, hell i
won't even mention the name (i'm sure you can all figure it out for
yourselves) but i just thought it was kind of interesting.
