Meeting September 8th - Running Linux on a Laptop Computer.

Running Linux on a Laptop computer creates a new set of challenges for Linux
users.
Items that are usually unique to laptop computers include:
PCMCIA card support, Power Management, remaining battery life,
pad/stick pointing devices (mouse support), integrated sound,
and Xservers on a fixed resolution LCD screen.

If you are thinking of buying a laptop and running Linux on it, you will
want to research laptop hardware configurations before you buy.
If you encounter a compatibility problem, you cannot just replace out
the problem card like a desktop since almost all the hardware is
integrated into the laptop. There is a network of "Linux on Laptop"
web pages that makes this research easier. The presentation will address
all of these topics.

Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software Developer for Armstrong
International Inc. where he is responsible for a HP-UX network of Servers,
Workstations, printers and X-Terminals spanning five buildings in Three
Rivers. Bruce has a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from
Central Michigan University. (go Chips! :) Bruce runs Linux, almost
exclusively, on all his PC's at work and home, and runs some of Armstrong's
networking services on Linux.

Bruce has installed Linux on three different brands of Laptops. A Toshiba,
a Micron, and most recently, a Gateway 2000 Solo 9100. As always, Bruce
will have his Linux based laptop at the meeting for the presentation.

SPECIAL NOTE:
Meeting attendence is important! Coming to three meetings will qualify you
as a full member of KLUG, meaning that you can participate in the process of
making formal decisions, including voting for officers.

During the last week in January, KLUG decided (by vote) to define a voting
KLUG member as one who has attended three KLUG meetings:

"In order to make any group wide decisions during a meeting, at least
7 people must be in attendance, and each of these 7 people must have
been to at least 3 meetings before."

As there are people who are examing how to better organize KLUG to serve a
growing list of people interested in Linux, it's important to be aware of
this so you can be assured of participating in any group decisions.
