Connection help for a new user....

Hi I know this may sound like a simple question but a response would be 
greatly appreciated i have been trying (to no avail) to get my system to 
connect to my isp (netlink) for about ten days now .... after reading 
much documentation and many trial and errors i have come to the 
conclusion that the reason i can not connect may be due to the 
possibilty that netlink (my isp) incorporates or does not incorporate 
some minor thing that differs just enough from the standerd that i can 
not establish a successful connection....or that i am missing somthing 
vital in my understanding of configuring such a connection....or that 
this linux to isp thing is much more complex then i 
gather.............if anyone in your group uses netlink and if they 
could instruct me as to how to configure my system to do the same....i 
would appreciate it           p.s. i am using redhat5.1
