The State of KLUG, 5 weeks after organizing [Part I]

It has now been just over 1 month since we installed volunteers to
operate KLUG. I'd like to take this time to report on some of the
things we've done so far; in the next day or so I'll highlight some
of the areas that still require attention.

As always, I welcome your commentary; please direct them to me personally
(to bob@acm.org). I will answer them in a few days' time.

More people are now involved in running KLUG than ever, and fewer people
feel "overloaded" by the effort. To this extent, the organization effort
has been a success. For a list of all the new officers, please take a
look at a fairly new page on our web site...

      http://klug.armintl.com/officers

Clicking on the name will allow you to write a mail message to each officer;
you can find out exctly what people do by looking at:

      http://klug.armintl/com/organize/jobs.html

The officers' page was the first creation of our new webmaster, Mike List,
who is taking over the routine operation and expansion of our web site.
Please write to him with any ideas, suggestions, or corrections to be made
to the web site.

And speaking of our web site, please take a look at the meeting schedule!
We're booked up through November, with good speakers and presentations plan-
ned EVERY WEEK, including a

*** FIELD TRIP TO ISERV ***
and a
                      *** HALLOWEEN LINUX GALA ***

featuring games, scary costumes, and (IP :) masquerading!

Stay tuned to our schedule page for more news on these and other events, as
they are made ready.

Many thanks to Brenda Williamns, our new Program Director, for much of
this effort, she's really done a great job getting speakers lined up; and
we can all help out here by answering the call when Brenda contacts YOU!

Brenda has also been the driving force behind our latestt Survey, which we're
looking over now, and formulating the next one, probably due out in a week or
so. s we find out more this way, we'll be changing KLUG so it is more useful
to the largest number of people.

Thanks goes also to Bruce Smith, our intrepid vice-chair, and SITEMASTER,
for upgrading us to a 486-166 from a 486-33, and a software upgrade. Bruce,
we couldn't stage the site without you, so keep the good work up and them
machine cycles flowing!

We've also released word that we will host mailing lists on any topic that
is related to Linux... please send your requests to Scott Yellig, who will
be all too happy to help out. Thanks to Scott that our mailing list and
meeting reminder services continue to run smoothly!

Adam and I have been discussing fund-raising ideas, and we've started to ac-
cept donations at meetings. Thanks also to Adam for selling some Linux books
at meetings, the proceeds going ENTIRELY into the small but growing KLUG
Treasury. We're also looking into becoming an official non-profit organiza-
tion, which will help us in several areas.

In general, we're also talking about different kinds of meetings, one much
as we have now, and other, more focussed groups, on single topics. I'll
be writing more about this in the future, and I welcome your comments on
this idea.

For the first month, we've done fairly well, in broadening what we provide
to everyone, while keeping up our meeting activity and on-line support, and
in getting everyone up to speed on what needs to be done to run the group.
With the end of summer vacation, I look forward to a new season, with good
topics, good company, and increased interest in Linux.

Tomorrow, I'll discuss some of the things we still need to do, and I welcome
anything about what YOU think we should tackle next.

                                                               Regards,
                                                               ---> RGB <---
