If the XFree86 config file doesn't match your monitor or video card,
it will go blank as you described. The easiest fix is to type a
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to kill X-Windows. If that doesn't work, type
CTRL-ALT-F3 (or some function key number) to get to a different
virtual terminal, "ps ax" to find the "X" process and "kill" it.
Or you can do the Micro$oft solution and "shutdown -r now" as
Dan suggested.
The point is NEVER press POWER/RESET with Linux running or you can
trash your filesystem (as you found out).
You can try fixing it by booting to single user mode and running
"e2fsck" on the problem partition.
