Excuse me for butting in, but the problem appears to be the same as
for some IBM Thinkpads... Linux doesn't read the drive geometry
correctly.  You would need to set the drive geometry in the lilo.conf
file.  In this case, you would need to have a boot disk handy until 
everything's configured correctly.

If the hardware can boot from /dev/sdb, then LILO should work from
there.

Btw, DOS uses the active partition flag.  Linux ignores it.

I don't know if this qualifies as "authoritative."
