Meeting November 17 - Different Linux Distributions: A Panel Discussion
Most of us obtain Linux through one of several "distributions", a set of
software that includes the Linux kernel, numerous utilities, other items
such as X-Windows and applications. Different distributions represent
a number of choices in how the packaging and installation is done, what
specific software is included, and the overall layout of the installed
system. Strong feelings, sometimes great loyalties, develop around one
or another distribution.
For the first time, we'll take a look at these distributions side by side.
Panel members represent each distribution, and are prepared to discuss the
advantages of each.
Robert Kiesling - Debian GNU/Linux
Mike List - Slackware
Bruce Smith - Red Hat/S.u.S.E. Linux
Adam Williams- Caldera
We are still looking for representatives for other distributions
(MkLinux,Stampede, others?) to serve on our panel. If you are interested
please send an E-mail to
Brenda Williams
Mike, Bruce, and Adam are experienced users of the Linux distributions they
have volunteered to represent; they are all KLUG officers and have presented
before.
Robert Kiesling is an invited guest panelist has been writing with
and about computers for over 15 years. He has been using Linux since 1991.
The maintainer of the Linux Frequently Asked Questions with Answers (FAQ)
list(posted monthly on comp.os.linux.annouce, latest version available here),
and editor of Dr. Linux 6th Ed. and Linux Systems Labs' Linux Installation
and Getting Started.
Robert G. Brown will act as moderator.

SPECIAL NOTE:
Meeting attendence is important! Coming to three meetings will qualify you
as a full member of KLUG, meaning that you can participate in the process of
making formal decisions, including voting for officers.
During the last week in January, KLUG decided (by vote) to define a voting
KLUG member as one who has attended three KLUG meetings:
"In order to make any group wide decisions during a meeting, at least
7 people must be in attendance, and each of these 7 people must have
been to at least 3 meetings before."
As there are people who are examing how to better organize KLUG to serve a
growing list of people interested in Linux, it's important to be aware of
this so you can be assured of participating in any group decisions.
