I will discuss solutions to your problems in general, and I ask people
who are more familiar than I with Debian to fill in some of the specifics.
I don't know how much of the software discussed below is available as .deb
files, or what their names might be.

OK, I would reccomend a program called xvidtune, which aloows you to see a
lot of data about the current screen setting, gives soem fine adjustment, and
llows you to move to the next (or previous) mode setting that is set for
you in the XF86Config file. I also suggest taking a look at that file,
but play with xvidtune fist.
Another good progream is XF86Setup, which was created by the XFree86 folks to
provide for graphically oriented setup. you'll need the 16 color VGA server to
run this program.

Do you mean add things to the menu?

This depends on what soundcard and kernel you have. Please let us know these
thing, and we can proceed from there.

You will require a number of other items to compile the kernel. The gcc
compiler, the bin86 assember, and make are required. you will also need a
number of other "include" files that may not be packaged with kernel source.
I hope this helps, and I'd again ask for someone with more knowledge of Debian
to post a followup message.
