Modem Recommendations?

I am thinking of finally upgrading my old reliable internal 28.8k modem to
something a little more snappy, and external.  I was wondering if anyone had
any recommendations or brands to avoid?

This move is precipitated by my increased used of "interactive" services such
as voice-over-IP and ICA (Winframe).  I know that the 56k modems receive faster
than they send,  and if in fact, a 33.6 or something might be a better bet if
traffic in-out is actually quite balanced.  Or is the diffrence not that
significant/
