While not a Linux laptop runnner, I do follow new items about Linux-related
software, and I do recall that SuSe and Red Hat were carrying X-Servers for
the NeoMagic chipset on their websites. Originally these were availabel in
Binary-Only form (not really OSS). More recently, I saw something about the
source being open for this X-server.

If you have not done so already, I would suggest visiting the RH or SusE
sites, going to the freshmeat site and trying a search for "neomagic", visit-
ing sunsite (name now change to metalab, the link to the Linux Documentation
Project on our website goes there). Perhaps this Xserver will give you the 
added flexibility you're looking for.
