[ Could somebody put this info on MDLUG and LUGWASH's websites? We have
a 100 seat room and I would like to see us fill it. Please tell
everyone! - Thx Tim]
Eric Raymond's talk
"The Open Source Revolution"
Abstract:
Recently the software industry has been shaken up by the explosive
growth of
`open-source' software projects like the Linux operating system, which
exhibit an unprecedented degree of reliability and performance. The
fundamental innovation behind this new wave is not in technology per se
but in the social process by which the software is developed. Mr.
Raymond
will describe this process, how it differs from traditional methods, and
how it challenges many assumptions rooted in scarcity economics and
command/control institutions.

(2) Time / Place / Directions:
Monday, Jan 11 at 7pm
Ehrlicher Room (411) West Hall
School of Information
University of Michigan, Central Campus
The noon talk will also take place. This second presentation is for the
LUG's. Please
advertise everywhere!.
There are several ways to get to campus but this is the single easiest:
On 94 West, take the State Street Exit Right/North (same as for
Briarwood Mall)
(i) Travel North on State for a few miles to South University, go right
The stoplight puts you at the southwest corner of central campus
Watch for Hill Street before S. University
Watch for North University to indicate going too far
(ii) Travel East 2 blocks to East University
This is a 3-way stop
West Hall is immediately on your left
There is a Cava Java coffeshop diagonally to your left
(iii) West Hall marks the southeast corner of central campus
Enter the archway, the School of Information is on the Left
The Ehrlicher Room (rm 411) is on the 4th floor
Free parking: From the 3-way stop continue east 1 block to Church St, go
left
The parking structure is 1/2 block on your right
Parking is free at 6pm so a university parking sticker is not
needed
If free parking is full, park on the street or go to the paid lot 1
block
further on S. University right on Forest St.
(Alternatively, if you're coming from the North, a good route is to take
23
(south) to Washtenaw (west) to South University (east). Then you come
in
east of campus and just reverse the directions from ii above)
