That's fine. Simply pointing out some of my own approach and reasoning.

I don't think ALSA is "harder"; it was simply harder to understand some
of the things the developers were suggesting, mostly because English is hardly
their native language. I'm doing something about that now by writing better
documentation for ALSA, at on the install/configure side.

Readers should note that I run my own LAN, and the kernel on the gateway
to the Internet is a 2.0.35-2 kernel, specially patched for a few things ;)
Otherwise I would have upgraded this machine long ago, for security if
nothing else.
