ALSA was no harder at the time. The above being true, sndconfig got easier.

At ther moment, yes. I do note that they've cleaned up their documentation
a bit, included more examples, clarified the install. Probably not as easy
and sndconfig, but easier than it was, and it get some people the added
functionality required, which IS indeed important...
