If you want to take the easy way out, upgrade to Redhat/BSware 5.2.
They really improved sound support in the latest distribution, and 
the newer kernels (2.0.36) have complete new sound drivers, the OSS 
(open sound system) lite drivers completely replaced the old kernel 
sound drivers.  Big improvement.

Or if you'd rather be a masochist, try the ALSA sound drivers.
They are better yet, but a real pain to get working the first time.
