New Gateway G6-450

I have a new G6-450 on which I recently installed the S.u.S.E.
distribution in a dual-boot mode with dos/W98.  I have a 3Dfx Voodoo
Banshee board with 16 meg of video ram, but I'm only able to set up
the VGA_16 x-server, and it looks too much like a Win3.1 session... 
The S.u.S.E. support web page talks about the pre-alpha release of an
x-server file, but I'm too new at this to know exactly what to do, so
here are my questions:
1) what does everyone think (in general) of the S.u.S.E. distribution?
2) isn't there an easier way to get my x-server to go more than 16
colors @ 640x480?
3) should I stick with my day job?
