Ftape Installation

I'm having some problems configuring a tape drive. It's an old Colorado
Jumbo 250 (QIC -80 type). I understand the ftape drivers covers this type
of floppy controller tape drive. I downloaded version ftape-4.02 and
ftape-tools from the sunsite web page. After multiple compiles and
re-installs the best I can get  is the following error message...

ftmt: /dev/qft0 Device not configured.

I'm out of ideas. I printed a mountain of readme's and man files trying to
figure this out. This old QIC-80 drive is all I have for backups, so I
really need to get this thing going. I can't figure out what I could have
forgotten. I followed the instructions (to the letter) included with the
downloads. Can anyone help???
