Re: Compile the new kernel or not?
> That cleared things up really well,
Glad to hear it!
Keep us posted on your upgrade to kernel 2.2.x progress.
Especially problems you run into, and how you fixed them.
Since I don't use every aspect of Linux, there are probably
issues that I haven't found.
Issues what I've run into, or heard about (so far):
DHCP client. Different versions required for 2.0 & 2.2.
(DHCP server seems to work on both 2.0 & 2.2)
I've only heard about this, no personal experience.
PCMCIA I've heard that a new version is required, but haven't tried
upgrading my laptop yet. (I hate messing with PCMCIA :)
Printing. Required modification of printcap (device files changed),
and extra care required when compiling the kernel.
SMBMOUNT. Needs newer version from Samba 2.0. (old version fails)
Command syntax has changed in the new version.
All docs about the new syntax are wrong. I ended up
reading the source code to figure out how to make it work.
(email me for more details if you run into trouble).
I was mounting an NT4 directory, with a different user/password.
It may work better from a Win9[58] machine. Don't know.
Also, the RPM for Samba 2.0 doesn't contain binaries for
smbmount, so compiling from source is required.
IPFWADM. Has to be upgraded to IPCHAINS. (which has a new syntax too)
I cheated and found a wrapper to convert the old syntax to the
new command.
Email for more details if you can't get one of these to work.
P.S. Kernel source 2.2.1, Samba 2.0 source, and IPCHAINS (& wrapper)
are included on BSware 5.2 #6.0 in a separate directory (they not part
of the standard Redhat distribution, and cannot be installed by with
the standard install/update process).
