Re: Upcoming in March!

Hi,

i'm trying to be a little more scientific in my next linux crusade. Here's
the deal. My Linux box has an ancient Wd8013 network card. Its set up to use
IRQ3, which i think is a Bad Thing since someday i hope to hook something to
Com1. besides, i wanted to get a newer PCI network card for a little better
performance. anyhow, i found a $9 NE2000 compatible card (so much for speed)
and i want to drop it into my system. Now, i've heard wailing and gnashing
of teeth associated with adding a 2nd ethernet card to a Linux box, so i
want my act together before i start.

Now, the cable company has been digging in my front yard and burying optical
fiber and i am planning on getting a cable modem as soon as i can. From what
i hear, the way cable modems work is to put an ethernet card into your
machine that talks to the cable company's subnet. I'm now using the internet
via a linux ipmasq router. this'll be even more vital when i've got cable
bandwidth to share with my family. this means my router will have to have
two ethernet cards. thus, i have another motivation for howto add a ethernet
card.

right now, i see routers on SOHO networks, to be the best possible way to
get Windoze users into Linux.

can anybody give me a decent reading list of howtos that focus on the 2nd
ethernet card issue?

thanks in advance,

steve
