linux distribution?

hey all -

my name is rob, i used to be a member of KLUG a year or so ago, but then
i left for africa and decided to unsubscribe.  anyway, i'm back and
trying to get some new LINUX to install.  i was considering the newest
slackware (3.6), but i recall hearing something before i left about how
slackware was horrible now because they took out something great.  so,
two questions:

1) did anyone else hear/experience that, sometime around slackware 3.4?
2) if so, is it better now, or still just as bad?

anyway, the reason i was considering slackware at all is because it's
the one i always used to use, and i don't want to learn a new
distribution just now.  even an easy one like redhat.
