PCI bridge...?

has anyone ever had any trouble with a "PCI bridge" being needed to make a
PCI slot work?  i have an Asus motherboard which came with a CD containing
a software patch (win95, of course) to update some drivers so that i could
use my modem.  it's not detected in Linux, even after i said what port
(COM2 -- /dev/cua1) to look at.

the reason i bring this up to the group is that asus has no linux-related
tech info and, worse yet, no email address to contact for tech support :(
i think i'll call the 800 number and bug them for a few hours.
