Alan,
kppp needs the /etc/ppp/options file to be completely blank. Kppp has its own
place to enter pppd options. Strangely enough, kppp won't work if
/etc/ppp/options doesn't exist.... go figure. If you have RH, open the file and
delete the "lock" option probably stored there.
