I have seen this before,  but I can't remeber exactly what caused it.  If I
recall correctly it was when my boot disk was trying to mount the wrong
partition as root,  and thus the /dev/tty* files weren't there to start a
console.  Can you do an rdev on your boot disk?  (Of course this requires a
working machine).

Someone tell me if I'm off base here.
