More interesting tidbits. When I try to use the rescue disk, it starts the
normal boot dialog stuff, then it just stops with the last 3 lines on the
screen being:

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
Trying to unmount old root ... okay
Unable to open an initial console.


Maybe that will give some clues
