This error message is not what is halting X.  Its a config problem
elsewhere... I have researched the hell out of the FreeFontPath Problem and
have yet
to locate an answer... Let me ask, what distribution are you running?
When I let the scripts configure the paths it worked for some odd reason...
 Are you
by any chance running SUSE? Send more information on your config
scripts...
