Yes, they are out there; I wanted to get the latest and greatest as things 
are evolving on the SANE front, especially with regard to cameras and the 
lastest release mentioned to UMAX drivers in particular. One of the things I
have noted is that there's a lag between the release of a product and the
time someone packages it into an RPM. The version of SANE that I ended up
using was downloaded from the SANE site only 7 hours after it was put there,
and with GIMP and other libraries changing, it seemed the doing my own compile
was very much the better choice.
