Re: Installing a NIC

Hi again, Chris:
I wanted to place this one on the list server as I
am a bit rusty with manually configuring a NIC in
RedHat, and it's been a while since I have configured
an Intel NIC. If anyone sees any problems, please feel
free to jump in and correct me...

As I recall, there was a problem with the 2.0.35
kernel and Intel EtherExpress NICs. As a result, a
German fellow began to rewrite the module. I
downloaded his module, compiled it, and it worked
fine. I have Intel NICs with the 82595 chip, and I
ended up using the eepro module, not the eexpress
module. The site with the modules is still up; the
address is:

http://titan.cs.uni-bonn.de/~canavan/eepro/

As far as getting it recognized, try passing the
following parameters:

modprob eepro io=NNN
modprob eepro irq=NN
modprob eepro io=NNN irq=NN

One of these should get the card recognized, I don't
believe that you can pass just the module name alone
and expect the kernel to find the NIC.

Now, where to load the module? As I said, in
Slackware it's in the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file. This
file does not appear in RedHat, but I found many
modules being loaded in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. I have
also read that it's customary to place user-defined
configuration info in the /etc/rc.d/local file. Any
comments from others on which might be more
appropriate?

I also do not know where to place the eepro module
once it has been compiled. You might check the docs
that come with the module, or if someone on the
listserver knows where it would go, feel free to jump
in.

This should get you on the way to getting the card
up and running. As far as configuring addresses, etc.
in RedHat, I'm the wrong guy to ask. I shamefully
admit that, in RedHat, I let the OS installation guide
me through setting up the addresses. ;)

Good luck, and keep me posted.
