Some Unices (notable AIX in my experience) are rather odd in the way they
handle devices, so it isn't that suprising.

I have a Quantum DLT driver and it works great. Packs 70Gb on a
cartridge and is probably as fast as the harddrive I had in my
first IBM XT. Also have an 8mm Exabyte (in an IBM RS/6000) and
they're reliable but rather pokey complared to the DLT. One note
about the DLT cartridges is that they are slighly fragile, dropping
one only a few feet can ruin it.
