BSware 6.0 is up to version # 4.0 now, but nothing has changed
that should have anything to do with modems, Gnome or KDE.

Make sure:
1) You have COM2 disabled in your BIOS
(unless it's an external modem plugged into COM2! :)
2) It's not a winmodem.
3) /dev/modem is linked to /dev/ttyS1
You also might want to try kppp through KDE, just in case
there is a problem running it through Gnome. (don't know)

Init strings vary from modem to modem, and I'm not familiar with your
modem, so I can't help you much there. The factory defaults may work.
Usually set by "AT&F" or your first init string above should work.
If it's USR compatible, then "AT&F1" is all you need.
Even if your init string is wrong, you still should hear it dial,
so I'd double check your hardware settings and make sure you don't
have any IRQ conflicts (disable COM2 in your BIOS!).
