Guys -
There are several steps, and it depends on what SCSI card and scanner
you have.

First of all, you need to find out what SCSI card you have, and see if the
kernel supports it.

Second, go to the SANE page, and see if SANE supports your scanner and card
combination.

You may be able to get away wothout compiling a kernel; depending on card
and configuration. There are SCSI cards that are recognized almost at once,
while others take some configuration work. Many of the "SCSI" cards that come
with scanners (including the HP's and my UMAX, which works GREAT under SANE),
are NOT SUPPORTED and should be removed from your system.

Anyway, what card do you have?
