oooh, i've seen this on my machine months back when i was installing Linux.

if i recall correctly, i hit this problem, got flummoxed (like yourself)
flailed around for a while w/o success, and then i didled with my BIOS
settings in the CMOS setup and walla, it all started working el perfecto. if
you've got a relatively new BIOS you'll have plenty of settings to tweak,
try that. or wait a millisecond, and someone smart will come up with a
better answer.

oh, and i understand about steep learning curves, getting X running was an
all nighter. and the dialup on demand PPP stuff was a war. fortunately, i
got good help from the list. good people haunt these parts. and they let me
lurk, too.
