ohh have you gotten the color depth up yet.... try startx -- -bpp 16  .... 
if all is configured right that should be 16bit X .... if that does work.... 
then in startx towards the bottom there is a like the says serverargs.....  
between the paranthesis add -bpp 16
ohh btw.... to do that.... open startx in a plain ascii editor of you 
choice... (vi, pico, whatever....)

or for all i care a hexeditor if you really want to.... i wouldn't tho :)
